How to research your eBook

Research

Assuming you're writing a non-fiction eBook, you'll probably need to do some research.

The research process should be completed before you start writing. The idea is to collect all the knowledge and information that you'll need to successfully complete the eBook.

Your research should aim to:
  1. Collect the basic information that will go into your eBook.

  2. Check the information that will go into your eBook is factually correct.

  3. Check the information that will go into your eBook is up to date.
When collecting the research material, I would suggest that you:
  1. Keep all electronic files that you're research uncovers for each eBook, in a separate folder on your computer.

  2. Bookmark (and organize your bookmarks logically) any useful web sites.

  3. Don't forget to use offline resources - like books and libraries!

  4. Keep a file of any photocopies, newspapers cuttings, etc., that form part of your research efforts.
Once you have all the materials assembled, you should logically organize them into roughly the same order as your eBook is planned to be in. Some materials turn out not to be immediately useful - but be cautious abouting deleting files or throwing stuff out - you never know when you might need it!

Finally, do remember that the research material is background material for your own writing - do not copy or plagiarize other people's work.

The only case where it's okay to use somebody else's work - is when you have permission from the copyright holder (usually that's the author).
