Chapter 5: Setup your Information page

In this chapter, we'll set your Information page, which is the first thing your customers see. They'll read this page before they decide to download the trial version of your E-Book.

Very often, you will want to make this page the main page of your web site.

The purpose of this page is to explain:

Exactly what customers will be downloading.
Why they will want to read your E-Book.
How to download it (usually a link they can click on to start downloading).

As you are going to allow them to download a feature-limited or trial version (and ask them to pay for a password later), you should also explain how this works. For example, you might say something like:

"Free Download! Read the first 3 chapters of my E-Book absolutely free! I am so confident that you will love this book that you don't need to pay a single cent until you convinced that you want to keep it. Only if you are absolutely convinced this E-Book is for you, click on the link in Chapter 4 to to keep reading!"

To make your E-Book available for download you need to upload your E-Book's EXE output file (if you're using a compiler like Activ E-Book Compiler), or E-Book's PDF (if you're using Adobe Acrobat) to your web space. You will need to either use an FTP program, or use the your web site's web-based control panel.

The 2 most popular FTP programs are WS_FTP and CuteFTP and you can download them both from zdnet. Enter the name of the program in the search form at this URL: http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/

Paths & URLs

Say the EXE file is C:\FirstSet\MyFirstBook.exe.

Say your web site is http://www.yoursite.com/.

You might upload this to a subdirectory on your web site. For example if you uploaded to the ebook subdirectory, the URL of the download would be http://www.yoursite.com/ebook/MyFirstBook.exe.

You can then create web pages that link to download the E-Book, using HTML like this:

<A HREF=http://www.yoursite.com/ebook/MyFirstBook.exe>Download Now!</A>

If you use a graphical HTML editor, you may simply need to type in the URL for a link to the downloadable file - in this example: http://www.yoursite.com/ebook/thebook.exe

Points to watch out for

Perform an anti-virus scan before uploading E-Books to your web site. You don't want to risk giving your customers a virus!
Always upload in binary mode.
Always use the correct case (upper or lower) in your links, most web servers are case sensitive.
After you think that you've finished - always double check your downloads work as intended!
