How to create 3D Virtual Boxes and EBook Covers

3D "Virtual Boxes" and "Virtual Covers"

Have you seen those cool 3D "virtual box" and "virtual cover" graphics than some people are using to promote their E-Books and software? Great aren't they?

Here are just a few ideas for using cover and box graphics (of course, you should always make sure that readers realize the the covers/boxes are just graphics are intended to represent actual physical products):
  • Use them to spruce up your own web site and help explain what you're offering.

  • Incorporate them in your advertising: Create advertising materials that leap off the page.

  • Place the graphic on the first/entry page within your finished E-Book
Obviously it's up to you to decide if you need these 3D boxes/covers - but if think you could do with a boost - then it's definitely worth consideration.

There are several ways to get your hands on these graphics (customized to match your E-Book of course). This include:
  1. CoverFactory Software Recommended

CoverFactory 2 is our company's special software designed just for creating eBook cover art. It's very flexible, it's easy to learn, and allow even non-artists to produce professional quality results. What's more you can download and try out a trial version of the program (some features are disabled in the trial version) for FREE, before deciding if you want to pay for the full version.

CoverFactory can also do a lot more than create eBook covers. It can also create virtual boxes, binders, floppy disk images, zip disk images, membership cards (with rounded corners), business cards, books/boxes/binders with CD-ROMs, and CD-ROMs. It can add shadows and reflections. It can add special effects (like Lens Flare or make web button designs) - and much more.

The easy part comes from three key functions:

    1. A wizard guides you step-by-step thru creating the object,

    2. You only need to worry about getting each side of the object right in 2D. CoverFactory automatically converts this into a 3D style image, complete with shadows, reflections, etc.

    3. Absolutely everything is explained in the Help documentation that comes with the program.

Download CoverFactory and see for yourself - I think that you'll love it.

  2. The Do-It-Yourself Approach - For the artistically talented

If you are good at drawing, another idea would to make your own boxes/covers using your favorite graphics program. Obviously you will need a good graphics program and some real skill at computer graphics.

Drawing a good virtual box/cover from scratch can be very hard, so it might help to have templates ("blank boxes/covers"), a toolkit, or at least a guide written by somebody who is both experienced at, and good at, this type of thing.

Here are some resources that may be helpful:

    • Free boxes and covers:

I found this web site which contains some free e-book cover images. Here are some samples:

I also ran across another web site which has more cover images. Here are some samples from this site:

    • Training on Creating 3D boxes and covers - If you want to become an artist

eBook & Software Cover Tutorial, as the name suggests, is a tutorial which is just about creating E-Book covers. In order to use this particular tutorial you will need to download a copy of Compact Draw (they offer a 30 day Free Trial so you have enough time to create plenty of covers). Take a look at this by clicking here.

  3. Pay somebody else to create the boxes and covers - If you want somebody else to do the work

Another idea is to pay somebody else (who is good at graphics) to create the eBook cover for you.

The upside is that you just pay, and then wait until your graphic is delivered.

The downsides are that you may not get what you want, you have to wait, and most importantly, if you have multiple eBooks, you'll need to pay for a cover for each (could get expensive!).

There are two choices if you want to go this route:

    • You can pay a professional graphics designer: expect to pay a few hundred dollars - yes this is expensive - but you can talk to the person in-depth (interview them) and see their portfolio and references being giving them the job.

    • You can use the E-Book Cover Art online service. The samples are truly stunning, (plus the price is reasonable) and their graphics are guaranteed to impress your customers and prospects.

Another talented designer who can create virtual covers for you, is Barbara Wilson of eCover Designs. who has a nice gallery of samples on her site.

Finally, one more cover design service that I recently discovered is KillerCover. There some good samples here, and they promise a quick turn around.
